Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before planning your trip.
How much does a mission trip cost?
A typical week-long trip runs approximately $1,000 per person, which covers all lodging, security, meals, transportation, translators, and “basic” mission projects. Airfare is not included and runs around $900. Bigger mission projects will increase the cost.
When can our team come?
We host mission teams year-round. You can request the week that works for you and we will confirm availability. While our summer season is the busiest and fills up quickly, fall, winter, and spring dates offer great opportunities for service.
Most teams arrive either Friday evening (spending the night in Managua) or fly in on Saturday and head directly to our campus in León. Departure schedules typically include leaving León for an off-campus cultural or tour day, staying overnight in Managua, and boarding your return flight home on Saturday. We are happy to accommodate alternative travel days or adjusted trip lengths based on campus lodging and staff availability.
How safe is the campus and surrounding area?
Safety is our top priority. The El Ayudante campus is secure, staffed with 24-hour on-site security whenever teams are present, and protected by trusted local personnel. Having served in León for more than twenty-five years, El Ayudante is deeply rooted, widely recognized, and respected across our neighboring communities.
We maintain strong, positive working relationships with local leaders and regional law enforcement. If any situation arises that might impact travel or project work, our experienced leadership team proactively adjusts daily schedules and project sites using real-time local information.
Do team members need specialized skills?
Not at all. You do not need construction expertise, medical training, or Spanish fluency to make a lasting impact. Our projects range from painting and light building to sorting food blessing bags, helping with children’s activities, or simply visiting and praying with families.
Our local staff and crew leaders guide you through every step, helping volunteers develop new abilities as they go. All that is required is a humble heart, flexibility, and a willingness to serve alongside our community.
Is there an age requirement to participate?
We generally recommend that the youngest participants be at least 12 or 13 years old. Exceptions can be discussed and coordinated directly between the team leader and our director.
There is no maximum age limit. As long as a team member is physically comfortable navigating the tropical heat, walking on unpaved terrain, climbing into our transport vehicles, and engaging in daily group activities, we welcome volunteers of all ages to join the mission.
